Fannish Rambles (Spoilers for ROD the TV)

Mon May 5, 2008, 2:28 PM
Of which the main subject is that I am so freaking SICK of seeing the female half of a boy-girl villain team getting all the hate from the fandom. Joker/Wendy, Magneto/Mystique (movieverse only, of course), Syndrome/Mirage, The Joker/Harley Quinn, the list goes on. If I see "well, HE was cool, but she was a bitch and I hate her and she should die and if you write about her you're a sociopath" one more time, I'm going to...well, probably rant some more in my journal. Sadly, until they invent a way to reach through the internet and smack a bitch, that's about all I can do. Saaaaaaaaad... :(

I just don't get it. Why is a male allowed to be a villain and still have fans, but the second a female character does something other than sit around and be pretty and charming, she's too horrible for anyone other than a sociopath to like? Why do we excuse things in men that we don't in women? Is it because most super-vocal fans are heterosexual women who think about the villains with their hands down their pants? Is it because the men-bashing that's become so popular in recent years has become ingrained, and everyone just sort of expects men to be total shits, while women should know better? It's just annoying that the female half of these villain teams is almost always less of a moral disaster than the man, yet is always considered far worse. Like, a guy shoots twelve people in the head, and he did it because his mommy didn't hug him enough; meanwhile, a woman, like, looks at someone with ill intent, and everyone in the fandom cries "IRREDEEMABLE BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH!!!!!!!!!!"

Harley Freaking Quinn, for the love of God! If there was ever a female character that turned evil FOR her guy, it was poor little Harleykins. And yet, according to certain batshit factions of the BtAS fandom, she's WAAAAAAAAAY more evil, and while the Joker himself can be redeemed with enough Hawt Buttsecks from Batman, she's going straight to Hell for daring to be attractive to her Puddin'. I mean, yeah, she's more evil in that she's a more effective villain. Doesn't have that gloating-while-her-victim-gets-away tendency that's kept Batman alive through his encounters with Mistah J.

Same story with Joker and Wendy. Eerily same, in fact. Joker always seems to be deified as some great visionary for his sadistic gloating, while Wendy's terrible for going along with something she believes in despite the ugly means. I mean, sure, he all but had his hand down his pants while he was telling Anita that her entire childhood was a lie, but did you see Wendy making Maggie cry, JUST to stop the only family she had from being messily killed by an irate Drake? What a bitch! Clearly, she has no good in her! Good people NEVER do stupid things to protect those they care about! And the best person to pass judgment is ALWAYS some fourteen-year old jackass on the internet! Yet again, despite not being quite as high up on the sadistic-fucker scale, Wendy's way better at villainy than Joker. Every time he comes face to face with the enemy, he gets injured. Wendy, through a little of the SUBTLETY that Joker clearly missed the lecture on, manages to wrap the heroes around her pinkie and get exactly what she wants. And yeah, evil as all hell, but if the heroes get to screw over everyone in their path to keep each other safe, why is Wendy ZOMG TEH ANTICHRIST for doing exactly the same frickin' thing?! And don't get me started on the book-burning thing! Did you or did you not see Yomiko torch an entire library full of books during her Donnie's-in-a-jar tantrum? Yes, she was upset; BUT. Wasn't Wendy also a little upset with Yomiko for killing a bunch of her friends? And thus burning books to lure Yomiko out into the open? I mean, geez. At least she didn't frickin' blow up a building (Joker took care of that with Dokusenshaland - which, come to think of it, I'm surprised he didn't pass off to her like EVERYTHING ELSE).

Meanwhile, Syndrome and Mirage. This is the one that confuses me the most. Mirage broke away from the ol' Lifestyles of the Rich and Evil. She went out of her way and took a lot of risks to help out the heroes. Syndrome showed absolutely no sign of being anything other than a brat with a whanging entitlement complex and a hell of a lot of growing up to do. Seriously; flipping his shit because a grown man wouldn't let him go charging into battle to get himself killed? Maybe Bob should have let him get splattered at twelve, for all the good he did to the world. At any rate, not only to I fail to see how Mirage was terrible for turning on Syndrome in an effort to help two parents keep their kids safe (and because he pretty much told her that her life was worthless, and because she had a whopping crush on good ol' Bob), I also fail to see how the gal who tried to redeem herself is WAAAAAAAY worse than the guy who made jack shit effort to make amends for his crimes. And I don't care how HAWT he is, or how TWAGIC his past was - murder is still murder.

Sigh. Yeah, still hatin' people over nyawh.

Ahem. And the moral of the story is, I take fictional characters and idiot fanthings' complaints regarding the same a little too seriously. ^^;;

Children's play never ends. Adults can scold them and tell them to stop, but they won’t. The only time when kids will really stop, is when they become adults themselves.
